How it all began..

My academic journey began with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey. Moreover, I hold a postgraduate degree in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning from the University of Texas. Building on my technical STEM background, I delved into the professional world at Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, where I integrated technical expertise with managerial responsibilities, solidifying my commitment to this interdisciplinary path.

My perfect fit: M.Sc. Management & Engineering in T.I.M.E.

When I started looking for programs, I wanted to consider every choice to make sure I will find the perfect fit. Initially drawn to the Full-Time MBA program at RWTH Business School to enhance my management skills, I stumbled upon their M.Sc. Data Analytics & Decision Science program. Its focus on data and technologies like artificial intelligence piqued my interest. So, I decided to take a personal consultation with the student recruitment manager. And guess what, I discovered yet another compelling option: The M.Sc. Management & Engineering in Technology, Innovation, Marketing & Entrepreneurship. This program combines management, technology, data analysis, innovation, entrepreneurship, and the opportunity for personal development in the dynamic environment of a business school, making it the ideal meeting point for my diverse interests. The program's curriculum is very versatile, sparking creativity as soon as you immerse yourself in this dynamic environment, particularly within the innovation and entrepreneurship modules.

“I immediately began to immerse myself in the world of management.”

The "Marketing" module left a lasting impression on me in my first semester. As an engineer, you naturally believe that your own product is the best on the market, but the change in perspective made me realize that technical excellence alone does not guarantee sales success. This realization was really eye-opening.

In addition, I was particularly impressed by the professor's extraordinary teaching approach in "Strategic Management". The use of real cases to illustrate complex scenarios made the subject remarkably understandable and tangible. I immediately began to immerse myself in the world of management.

What makes this program stand out is the seamless integration of the course content. The connection between the modules facilitates the application of knowledge from one area to another and thus encourages more entrepreneurial thinking.

Finding myself in an inspiring community

Aside from the academic side of this Master's program, one of its biggest advantages is the vibrant community it fosters. In the class of full-time and part-time students on this program, it is easy to socialize and meet new people. Personally, I have broadened my horizons by traveling to meet some of the part-time students and build valuable relationships.

Dealing with different cultures, especially when working together in international classes, can be challenging sometimes. In our class, which is made up of participants from 14 different nationalities with an average work experience of almost five years, there are differences in timing, communication style, and professional and academic background. Getting everyone on board with an idea can be stressful, but if you keep an open mindset, you can learn a lot from each other and thus contribute to broadening international perspectives.

Recognizing the importance of these skills, RWTH Business School provides great support through extracurricular workshops on topics such as communication, and cross-cultural collaboration within the Career Service. Personally, I actively participate in these workshops, seizing every opportunity to maximize my overall experience during this time here.

My tips for prospective students

I can only encourage you to opt for this program. If you're thinking about it, here are my three tips to help you on your way:

  1. Start learning German
The benefits you gain from learning German language and culture are immeasurable. Even if your skills are not yet advanced, people will appreciate that you are making an effort and opening up to the language and cultural nuances. Especially if you plan to stay in Germany after your studies, I highly recommend learning German.
  1. Get your paperwork done ASAP
Especially if you need a student visa, don't procrastinate on waiting for admission or weighing up your best options. Apply as early as possible to avoid unnecessary paperwork and minimize the risk of delaying your study start.
  1. Apply without overthinking
The decision to leave your familiar life behind and start a full-time Master's program in another country is a pretty big one. My urgent advice is to apply without overthinking it. Once you have been accepted, you can ask yourself all the questions and you will most likely think: Yes, it's worth it.

Final words

In my opinion, we should all be lifelong learners, because only by opening your mind and acquiring new skills can you grow. This program opens up a new world of possibilities. Seize them!
